AN OLD GRINDING WHEEL.

The Lodge

Here’s an old grinding wheel that was once used for sharpening knives and tools. It was recovered from a stream which runs through the old manor complex of Keynedon Barton in South Devon where it had been lying there for more than 60 years. ‘The Lodge’ is situated within the grounds of this manor complex and we have just completed a new retaining wall in front of it, all built in natural stone. It was decided that the old grinding wheel would have the name ‘The Lodge’ carved into it and then set into the new wall as a feature.

NEWNHAM PARK ESTATE WALL.

Newnham Estate

As mentioned previously in earlier posts we have been carrying out substantial repair work to the garden walls at Newnham Park Estate on the outskirts of Plymouth, and these repairs have now been completed. The scope of the work involved us rebuilding two sections of the garden wall and completely renewing the slate coping along its entire length.

And here’s the link if you want to find out more.

SOUTH DEVON COUNTRYSIDE.

Frogmore Estuary

We’ve been in the fields out at Sherford this week admiring the stunning views overlooking the Frogmore estuary. With little more than a pile of stone, a few sheep and some cattle to keep us company, we have been repairing the drystone walls that criss-cross the land. Originally, openings in field walls were probably about 6 feet wide, just enough to let a horse and cart pass through them. These days with the size of the modern farm machinery now required to tend the land these openings are no longer wide enough, and that is what we’ve been doing, making these openings wider to allow better access into these fields. Once the old opening has been made wider, the end of one side of the wall is then rebuilt using the existing stone to suit the new gates which are 15 feet in width.

This is one of three openings we have completed this week. So hopefully we won’t have to come back for a while, until that is they get bigger machines!
